Background: Hi, I’m Nina Bartholomew. I was born in Havre de Grace, MD, but grew up in Queens and Lagrangeville, NY. As a child, I dreamt of being an opera singer or a lawyer, and you’d be surprised how often those skills come in handy when teaching preschoolers!
In 2020, I started Little Garden Montessori as a response to the pandemic and the lack of resources for primary-aged children. Now, almost five years later, we have five teachers, office staff, full enrollment, and a growing, loving community. It was my dream to begin a school that looked like the school I wished I had. I am proud of what we have created and feel truly grateful to get to do this every day.
Advice: The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is, "This too shall pass." It taught me to understand that difficulties are usually temporary and to cherish the good times. As a parent, I wish someone had told me that I wasn’t alone in this journey.
Inspiration: The most inspiring part of working at Little Garden Montessori is watching the children interact in a kind and loving way. I love when they give each other lessons and support each other’s learning.
Montessori Work: My favorite work to do with the children is easily the trinomial cube. It’s a wonderful tool that helps them understand complex concepts through hands-on learning.
Montessori vs. Traditional Education: Before Little Garden Montessori, I worked in a traditional school setting. I’ve seen how the Montessori philosophy gives children more autonomy and true freedom, not just imposed freedom. I always trust what the child shows me and give them the respect they deserve, which helps boost their confidence and well-being later in life.
Favorite Part of Working with Kids: My favorite part about working with kids is that they are joyful, honest, and hilarious. They truly are the best of us.
Message to Parents: I wish parents of Little Garden Montessori students knew how much I love being with their children. I think about them all the time, how to reach them, and how to give them what they need. I don’t take lightly the choice you made to entrust me and Little Garden Montessori with helping to raise your children during this formative time.
